Air is actually second movement from orchestra suite Nr 3 in D major that most likely was written in Köthen around 1720. The reason that it often is called Air on the G-string is that the violinist Wilhelmj in 1871 found out that the melody sounded best if it was played only on the lowest string of the violin. That is why he transposed the whole song down nine tones to C major.
